Empowering Nurse Practitioners and Pharmacists: A Step Toward Solving Ontario’s Primary Care Crisis

Ontario is in the middle of a primary care crisis. Millions of Canadians remain without a family physician, and access is most strained outside of the Greater Toronto Area. Too many patients are left without timely care, facing long waits and avoidable trips to emergency rooms.

Recently, Newfoundland and Labrador announced a $2 million pilot project to provide nurse practitioners with publicly funded pay, removing the need for patients to pay out-of-pocket. This decision recognizes the critical role of allied health professionals in extending and strengthening primary care access.

At Orleans Family Health Clinic (OFHC), we know firsthand how powerful this model can be. Nurse practitioners and pharmacists are highly skilled professionals who, when supported, can reduce the overwhelming burden on physicians and help close Ontario’s access gaps. Allowing them to do more means:

  • Faster access to treatment.
  • Shorter wait times.
  • Stronger community health outcomes.

Ontario has made some progress with minor ailment prescribing for pharmacists, but this is only a beginning. If the Ford Government is serious about solving Ontario’s primary care crisis, it must expand pharmacists’ scope of practice and publicly fund nurse practitioners, following the example set in Newfoundland and Labrador.

This is not just about big cities. Rural and northern communities — where the shortage of family doctors is most severe — urgently need empowered pharmacists and nurse practitioners to fill the gap. By working together as a team, we can ensure no Ontarian is left behind.

At OFHC, we are proud to integrate family physicians, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists into one coordinated system. This is what we mean by Complete, Comprehensive, Caring, and Connected care. It is the model Ontario needs province-wide — and we are already delivering it here in Orleans.
