Is Social Connection Becoming a Thing of the Past? We’re Here to Help You Reconnect — With Your Health and With Each Other

At Orléans Family Health Clinic, we’ve been proudly serving the Orléans community for decades. As one of the oldest and largest family medical clinics in Eastern Ontario, we’ve seen firsthand how the rhythms of life have changed — and how those changes affect not just physical health, but emotional and social well-being too.

A recent Statistics Canada report has confirmed something many of us have been feeling: Canadians are spending less time with friends and loved ones than ever before, especially working-age adults.

Here’s what the data shows:

  • In 2022, only 19.3% of Canadians reported spending time with friends on an average day — down from 47.9% in 1986.
  • For those between 25 and 64 years old, that number has dropped sharply — from 42% to just 14%.
Even among youth aged 15 to 24, the most socially active age group, interaction rates fell by over 30 percentage points.
  • Nearly half of Canadians (46%) now say they worry they aren’t spending enough time with friends or family.
  • And more than 1 in 4 Canadians report feeling “pressed for time” — the highest level since these metrics began in the early 1990s.

Why This Matters to Us at OFHC

We know that strong social connections are a key pillar of good health — just as important as proper nutrition, regular exercise, and routine medical care. Loneliness and isolation have been linked to:

  • Higher rates of depression and anxiety
  • Increased risk of chronic illness, including heart disease
  • Slower recovery from illness or surgery
  • Shorter life expectancy

That’s why we don’t just treat symptoms at OFHC — we care for people.

Our clinic has always believed in a whole-person approach to care. That means not only looking after your physical health, but also understanding the social and emotional challenges that affect it.

You’re Not Alone — And You Don’t Have to Feel That Way

Whether you’re struggling with isolation, time pressure, caregiver stress, or just feel like the modern pace of life is pulling you away from what matters, know that we are here to listen and support you.

We can help with:

  • Mental health check-ins and referrals
  • Chronic disease support programs
  • Family health counselling
  • Lifestyle and stress management guidance
  • Navigating community resources for seniors, parents, or caregivers
