Health Canada Approves Ozempic to Protect Kidneys in People with Type 2 Diabetes

Health Canada has approved Ozempic (semaglutide) for a new use: reducing the risk of kidney deterioration in patients with Type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

This approval is based on results from the international FLOW trial, which showed that people taking Ozempic had a 24% lower risk of kidney failure, dialysis, or major kidney decline compared to those receiving a placebo.

Why this matters:

  • Between 30–50% of people with Type 2 diabetes develop some form of chronic kidney disease.
  • Many patients fear dialysis or transplant — Ozempic may help reduce that risk.
  • The medication also lowers cardiovascular death rates, addressing another major complication of diabetes.

Dr. David Cherney, a nephrologist at Toronto General Hospital and senior scientist at UHN, says these findings provide new hope for patients:

“I can reasonably reduce that risk and thereby reduce their anxiety and fear of serious complications.”

More than blood sugar control

Ozempic was originally approved in Canada for lowering blood sugar and later as a weight-loss medication (under the brand Wegovy at higher doses). Now, it becomes the first GLP-1 drug in Canada approved to protect both kidneys and the heart in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Side effects to know about

Most patients tolerate Ozempic well, but common side effects can include:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Mild stomach upset

Rare but more serious complications include gall bladder inflammation and pancreatitis.

For most patients, doctors believe the benefits — slowing kidney decline and reducing heart risks — outweigh these potential side effects.
