Our Pediatric Specialists Are Here for Your Family Doctor Referrals: Understanding Autism Subtypes and Genetics
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is far from one-size-fits-all. Recent research has identified four distinct subtypes of autism, each driven by unique genetic patterns. These findings enhance our understanding of early brain development and could guide more personalized care for children and families.
A study published in Nature Genetics analyzed genetic, phenotypic, and clinical data from the SPARK cohort, a U.S.-based autism research project with over 380,000 participants. Researchers focused on 5,392 children with ASD, aged 4 to 18, and used 239 phenotype features from diagnostic questionnaires and developmental histories to classify them into subtypes.
The four autism subtypes identified are:
- Social and Behavioral Challenges – ~37% of participants
- Mixed ASD with Developmental Delay – 19% of participants
- Moderate Challenges – 34% of participants
- Broadly Affected – 10% of participants
Each subtype shows unique developmental, behavioral, medical, and psychiatric traits, along with distinct genetic variations. This discovery underscores that the diversity seen in autism may arise from different biological mechanisms rather than a single common genetic pattern.
Researchers believe this approach can help explain why past genetic studies sometimes fell short. By first separating individuals into clinically meaningful subtypes, the complex genetic landscape of ASD becomes clearer—like solving multiple jigsaw puzzles rather than one mixed-up puzzle.
While previous large studies, such as the 2020 Autism Genome Project, have identified risk genes and linked them to clinical features, this latest work highlights the importance of integrating genetic, phenotypic, and developmental data to refine our understanding and support children more effectively.
