ADHD Medication Use During Pregnancy and Risk of Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children

Is it Safe to Take ADHD Medications During Pregnancy?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder, affecting individuals across the lifespan. ADHD medications are among the most frequently prescribed drugs during pregnancy, with approximately 0.8–1% of pregnant women currently using them. While previous studies have largely focused on short-term outcomes such as congenital malformations and delivery complications, long-term effects on child development remain less explored.

Limited guidelines about using ADHD medication during pregnancy

Due to limited evidence on the long-term safety of ADHD medications during pregnancy, no formal clinical guidelines currently exist. As a result, many pregnant individuals choose to discontinue ADHD medications out of concern for potential developmental risks to their children. To address this gap, Swedish researchers conducted a large population-based cohort study and meta-analysis to investigate whether prenatal exposure to ADHD medications is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring.

What Does the Latest Research say?

Using national registers, the study examined 861,650 children born to 572,731 mothers in Sweden between 2008 and 2017. Researchers assessed exposure to methylphenidate, amphetamines, and atomoxetine—both individually and collectively—and compared outcomes to children whose mothers had discontinued ADHD medications prior to conception. The primary outcomes included diagnoses of any neurodevelopmental disorder, specifically ADHD and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Does Taking ADHD Medication During Pregnancy Affect Child Development?

The study found no increased risk of long-term neurodevelopmental disorders in children exposed in utero to ADHD medications. These findings reaffirm earlier safety data on methylphenidate and provide new evidence supporting the safety of amphetamines and atomoxetine during pregnancy.
