Measles Cases Climbing in Ontario — What You Need to Know to Protect Your Family

Public Health Ontario has reported 173 new measles cases in the past week alone, pushing the provincial total to 1,795 since the outbreak began in October.

The vast majority of those affected are infants, children, and adolescents—many of whom were not immunized.

At Orleans Family Health Clinic, we’re urging families to take action now. This is a critical time to ensure that you and your loved ones are protected against this highly contagious and potentially serious illness.

Key Facts:

    • 1,795 total cases across Ontario
    • 129 hospitalizations
    • 10 ICU admissions
    • Southwestern Ontario remains the hardest-hit region
    • Unvaccinated individuals continue to be most at risk

Why This Matters

Measles isn’t just a childhood illness—it can lead to serious complications including pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. It spreads through the air, making it one of the most contagious diseases known.
Infants under 12 months, who are too young for the MMR vaccine, are especially vulnerable—and rely on community immunity to stay safe.

How You Can Protect Your Family

    • Check your vaccination records: The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is highly effective and usually given at 12 months, with a booster at 4–6 years.
    • Catch up on missed vaccines: If you or your child missed a dose for any reason, it’s not too late. Contact us to schedule a catch-up.
    • Watch for symptoms: Fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a blotchy rash are all signs of measles. If you’re concerned, call our office before visiting in person to avoid spreading the virus.
