Before Baby: How a Father’s Health Before Pregnancy Can Shape a Child’s Future

At Orleans Family Health Clinic, we care about your health before, during, and after pregnancy—and that includes dads-to-be.

A compelling new study from the University of Toronto is changing the way we think about family health. Researchers found that a father’s weight at the time of conception can influence a child’s growth and long-term risk of obesity—and not just in small ways.

The Findings:

  • Children whose fathers had overweight or obesity at the time of conception were nearly twice as likely to follow a rapid BMI (Body Mass Index) growth pattern by age five.
  • When both parents had obesity, the child’s risk of early rapid growth—and future obesity—rose more than fourfold.
  • These patterns persisted even after adjusting for income, physical activity, breastfeeding, daycare, and screen time.

The data came from over 2,200 families in the CHILD Cohort Study, one of Canada’s most comprehensive pregnancy-to-childhood research programs. Notably, this is one of the first large studies to include paternal health data.

What This Means for You

For years, the message around prenatal health has focused mostly on moms. This research helps shift the conversation to include fathers, and rightfully so.

A dad’s health—especially weight, nutrition, and lifestyle—can influence:

  • The child’s epigenetic programming (how genes are expressed)
  • Household health behaviours
  • The child’s early growth trajectory

“We often ask women to prepare their bodies for pregnancy—but we rarely ask men the same,” says study co-author Dr. Kozeta Miliku. “This research shows we need to change that.”

How Dads Can Prepare for Parenthood:

At OFHC, we encourage prospective fathers to take active steps to support their family’s future health:

  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle well before conception
  • Focus on nutrient-rich foods
  • Prioritize good sleep and stress management
  • Talk to your doctor about family planning, just like moms do

Whether you’re a new dad, planning a family, or supporting your partner during pregnancy, we’re here for you. Because good prenatal care starts with everyone involved.
